International Translation Day is more than just a date on the calendar. It's a tribute to the dedicated professionals who act as vital links between cultures. Every year on 30 September, International Translation Day celebrates the people who make communication possible across languages and cultures. The date is linked to Saint Jerome, widely known as the patron saint of translators, but the day itself is really about the work translators and interpreters continue to do today: helping people understand one another, making information accessible, and giving different languages and voices a place in the conversation. In a multilingual world, this work is also closely tied to linguistic diversity and to something very simple, but essential: everyone deserves the chance to understand and to be understood.

Opening Speech
Dr. Mary Yazbeck is the Director of the School of Translators and Interpreters of Beirut (ETIB-USJ). She teaches translation at undergraduate and master's levels. Her research covers literary and conference translation and localization. She advocates ethical, technocritical translator education and advances academic outreach and institutional collaboration.
Panel Moderator
Mrs. Christina Yepremian is the Senior Academic Coordinator of the School of Translation Dubai at Saint Joseph University Dubai. She is a PhD Candidate in Translation Studies at Saint Joseph University of Beirut and holds two Master’s degrees in Translation Studies from Saint Joseph University of Beirut and York University, Toronto. Her research interests lie at the intersection of migration and translation, translanguaging and multilingual practices, as well as the ways in which advertising leverages linguistic and intercultural skills to shape communication across languages and cultures.

Nayla Sabbagh is a Product Strategy & Experience Design Consultant with over 20 years of experience across the Middle East and GCC. Starting her career in graphic design, she evolved into experience strategy and leadership, eventually leading multidisciplinary design teams and large-scale transformation projects across the region. Throughout her career, Nayla has worked with leading brands and organisations including Yas Island / Miral Destinations, Expo 2020 and Expo City Dubai, Emirates NBD, DP World, Majid Al Futtaim, and government entities, helping shape digital products, services and customer experiences. She has held senior leadership roles at Havas, Mirum and Horizontal Digital, where she led teams of 10+ designers and worked across sectors including entertainment, banking, government, logistics and utilities. Today, she works independently with founders, businesses and teams on product strategy, experience design and transformation, and is the founder of nün Experience Design Consultancy.

Dr. Joseph El Maalouf is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Head of the Bachelor of Science in Data Science program at Saint Joseph University Dubai. He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, jointly awarded by Université Grenoble Alpes, France, and Saint Joseph University of Beirut, Lebanon. Prior to his current appointment, Dr. El Maalouf served as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Saint Joseph University of Beirut and the American University of the Middle East (AUM), Kuwait. His teaching and research span a broad range of topics in applied mathematics and data science. His research interests include numerical analysis, numerical probability, optimization and control, data science, machine learning, and deep learning. His work focuses on developing mathematical and computational methods to address complex scientific and real-world problems through advanced modeling, optimization, and artificial intelligence techniques.

Dr. Muhammad Amer is a Lecturer in Translation and Interpreting Studies at Cairo University and the Arab Open University (AOU). He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics and Translation and is a Chartered Linguist (CL), a Member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (MITI), and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (MCIL). His research interests include terminology, lexicography, and interpreter training methodology, and he is Academic Expert and Strategic Partner to GoInterPrep. Alongside his academic career, Dr. Amer is a Cairo-based Arabic–English conference interpreter with more than 15 years of professional experience since 2011, working in legal, medical, diplomatic, corporate, and Islamic discourse settings. In 2015, he founded The Verbal Gym, an interpreter training brand known for its practical, performance-driven programs. As a strategic consultant, he advises institutions on designing training programs, building specialized language departments, and delivering large-scale language projects. He is also a frequent guest on Nile International TV, where he has made dozens of appearances as an international relations expert on Egyptian foreign policy and infrastructure. His work brings together academic rigor, professional practice, and a commitment to training the next generation of interpreters.

Nancy Tahir is a certified Sworn Legal Translator in the UAE and a member of the ITI and CIOL in the UK. She co-founded Apex Group International, a multinational translation company. With over ten years of experience and a Master's in Translation Studies from Saint Joseph University in Dubai, she trains legal translators to effectively use technology. Additionally, Nancy is a PhD researcher in Translation Studies at FCH - Universidade Católica Portuguesa Lisboa and a Drama Therapy researcher with a passion for theatre.
